MERCIAN FESTIVAL OF STEEL

Sunday 16 August saw 110+ riders assemble at Mercian Cycles new factory & HQ in Little Eaton, Derby, for a staggered start in small groups of 6 to 8 riders, in each of the four Festival rides; the Bill Betton Memorial & Jeff Bowler Road Rides, plus the Crowbar & Ventura Gravel Rides.  The first and longer Road and Gravel Rides set off by Sue Betton, Bill’s wife and Mercian business partner for many years. 

A great social day was had by all, albeit a little challenging for the higher geared retro steel riders on Derbyshire’s rolling roads and Peaky ascents, but great feedback from all visitors from near and far.  Each ride taking a different look at the Derbyshire’s scenic back lanes and gravel routes. 

Back at Mercian HQ, the entertainment got off to a great start with local bands The Vibes, and Indie Division, whilst the riders, visitors both cyclists and non-cyclists joined in the celebrations with excellent food and drinks refreshments. 

Legends of Mercian trophies were awarded to local cycling legends and founder members of the 1960’s Mercian-Bantel Team, Belper’s own Derrick Woodings and Derby’s Eddie White; Sue Betton in memory of Mercian owner Bill Betton and the Memorial Ride.  Also in his absence, but to be awarded upon his return, the Jeff Bowler Ride trophy. 

Mercian Cycles and Belper Bicycle Club are truly grateful for the joyous support of all who attended and made this a brilliant day.  It was also a pleasure to host the event at Mercian’s new factory HQ in Little Eaton, Derby. 

Future events are already in the works, and please lookout for our next Retro Ride, where we will explore the less hilly scenic delights of Derbyshire’s Southerly routes.
