WORLD RECORD!!!
Belper BC rider Richard Thoday is a world record holder!!!
From Richard:
Back home and in recovery mode now.
Having set out to try to break two world records at the same time on 6th August at Reading velodrome I set out in the heat at 5pm to try to ride 234 miles without dismounting and 520k in 24 hours. With a great amount of support from spectators, media and support crew I set out lapping the 459m velodrome at Palmer Park Leisure centre with monotonous regularity. By midnight I had set a new Guinness record for longest distance but still had a long way to go to beak the original victorian record that Guinness don't recognise. As the sun rose I was still lapping but speed gradually decreasing. at 10am I passed the 234 mile mark but my body was shutting down fast so after a few more laps to ensure I'd broken the Victorian record for sure I gave in to the pain. My pace was no longer fast enough tis time to challenge the 24 hour record so I was lifted off the bike in a state of collapse.
The support from crew, leisure centre staff, onlookers, online support and all of you lovely people in the club was wonderful, I cant think how to express how vital all of that is to a bonkers ride like this.
The Just Giving page 'penny farthing round the bend' collecting money for Ashgate Hospice is clocking up a treat but is still live so if you think my pain is worth a bob or two then throw it in there now.
Huge thanks to Dawn for 'enjoying' our wedding anniversary watching be go round and round and round...
And as for the failed 24 hour attempt, never say never :)
